Quadrant handling system

Design, build, and modification of an industry game-changing inter array cable installation spread.

Developing a safe and flexible cable lay spread.

We were initially approached to develop a bespoke system to enable cable-installation operations at Ørsted’s Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm.

Designed to ensure safe and efficient cable deployment and pull-in operations, our modular deck spread could be readily mobilised to suit a range of vessels, ensuring flexibility for future projects.

Our system also incorporated a number of safety features, including hydraulic locking of the quadrant at predefined positions, to ensure personnel protection during operations.

The system was delivered on time, swiftly mobilised to meet our client’s schedule, and successfully completed its inter-array installation campaign.

Taking cable lay capabilities to the next level.

We were later approached by DeepOcean, to provide an upgraded system to suit an entirely new deck layout, and incorporate other, operator-owned equipment alongside our own.

We were able to achieve this and simultaneously upgraded our equipment to add additional functionality, including the addition of two new stern chutes and associated grillages. A novel quadrant handling A-Frame was also integrated, to streamline the most complex handling operation throughout the whole lay cycle. Our design also maximised technician productivity on-board the vessel, by allowing cable production units to be assembled offline, while the system carries out laying operations.

Using a very collaborative approach, we laid the groundwork for our customer to achieve more efficient and productive cable laying operations.

A highly successful deployment.

The extra functionality we added helped to support the safe and effective 1st and 2nd end deployment of the subsea quadrant. This enabled the system to successfully install offshore wind farm inter-array cables, for a leading international developer.

The equipment was also crucial in minimising on-site costs, accelerating the deployment process to achieve class-leading efficiency.

Following deployment by DeepOcean, our system facilitated the laying of up to four complete cables per day, on Race Bank, Bligh Bank, and Hornsea One offshore wind farms. This level of install capability was a previously unprecedented achievement.
